Recession-Friendly Mineral Makeup from e.l.f.

I’ve been curious about e.l.f. (Eyes, Lips, Face) makeup for a while now.  The cosmetics
are so inexpensive -- with many items like makeup brushes, mascara, and mineral foundation for $5 or less.  I don’t know how the brand keeps its costs so low, but I know there’s no better time to try them.

Pageant Princess lip gloss, $3
All of e.l.f.’s mineral makeup is totally free of parabens, preservatives, and chemical dye-frees. And the price can’t be beat.

Eyes

E.l.f.’s mineral eye shadow comes in a variety of funky shades, each for only $3!  The translucent shades contain vitamins A, B, C, and E add subtle highlights for daytime and pump up the drama for evening.  As an added bonus, the shadows also hydrate and minimize the appearance of fine lines.  Apply wet or dry using your fingers or a makeup brush.

Lips

This month, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month e.l.f. will donate all sale proceeds from its mineral lip gloss in Princess Pageant to support breast cancer research. The sheer lip gloss comes in other pretty, fun shades like Sorority Girl and Night Owl.  It’s made to give your lips a luscious shine without feeling sticky or tacky. Better yet, it’s infused with coconut oil and vitamins A and E to protect and moisturize your kisser. At three bucks each, I may pick up a few tubes.

Face

I haven’t fully jumped on the mineral foundation band wagon, but compared to Bare Minerals’ mineral foundation ($28), e.l.f.’s version also comes in my deep shade for a fraction of the cost ($5)! The weightless mineral foundation has built in sun protection (SPF 15) and promises to give your skin a natural glow and evenly blended, color-matched coverage.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Comes to Brooklyn, June 5-8

Attending a performance of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is always a highlight of my arts and culture calendar. An engagement with this awe-inspiring and genre-bending dance company is even better when they perform close to home at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.                                                                                                                                         Photo: Danica Paulos Ailey’s long-standing relationship with BAM began in 1969 when the trailblazing choreographer established The Ailey School in Brooklyn and presented his company’s...

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Graces Brooklyn Academy of Music, June 4-9, 2024

Dance is expression. Dance is spiritual. Dance is activism. Dance is life. I feel most alive when I am listening to music and dancing.  As a spectator and fan, some of my fondest moments of watching dance performances have been witnessing the dignity and grace of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Every time I see the Ailey company, I am inspired, moved, and grounded in the beauty and complexity of the African American experience.  Photo by Paul Kolnik For me, the highlight is always "Revelations," Mr. Ailey's three-part ode to his upbringing in the Black Baptist church. The three sections -- "Pilgrim of Sorrow"; "Take Me to the Water"; and "Move, Members, Move" -- tell the story of African American faith and persistence from slavery to freedom. Over the weekend,  I had the pleasure of taking an outdoor Community Workshop in downtown Brooklyn, where we learned some of the choreography for "Revelations." I beamed from ear to ear...

DanceAfrica 2024 Returns to Brooklyn Academy of Music

The DanceAfrica Bazaar is one of my favorite annual street fairs. I love to watch folks show up and show out in their flyest Afrocentric garb and to shop for handmade beaded bracelets and earrings from the African vendors.  And when I'm fortunate enough to snag a ticket as I did this year courtesy of BAM, I enjoy watching the kinetic African dancers (this time the country featured is Cameroon) during the spirited and spirit-filled DanceAfrica performance at the Howard Gilman Opera House.   (Photos courtesy of BAM/Tony Turner) If you want to join in the fun, here's the weekend lineup that's truly for the culture.
