4 Fashion Week Beauty and Health Essentials

Fashion Week is back and Everything She Wants plans to attend a few presentations, previews and runway shows.  To help us look and feel our best amidst the hustle and the bustle, here are a few of our must-have beauty and fashion essentials.

1. Nubian Heritage African Black Soap Body Wash keeps us feeling refreshed even while rushing from show to show. The paraben-free wash lathers up nicely and contains anti-bacterial and moisturizing ingredients including 100 percent Shea butter, Vitamin E, oats, palm ash, plantain peel extract, tamarind extract and papaya enzymes. The soap also seems to effectively combat smelly stress sweats. And we only regret we didn't discover this cleansing wash sooner!

2. We never thought we'd find a powder we like as much as Bare Minerals' loose powder, but SheaMoisture's new illuminating powder is our new favorite. The powder comes in several shades including ours (Mandalay Dusk) and is available exclusively at Target, along with the full line of preservative and paraben free cosmetics that includes rich wet/dry eyeshadow, mineral blush, lip/cheek balm, sheer foundation, CC cream and eyeliner.

3. We plan to keep our Fashion Week stress in check with Bach's Rescue Pearls. So whenever we feel it's getting' kinda hectic, we will pop his alcohol-free version of Bach's popular Rescue Remedy  under our tongue. The natural ingredients help you cope with a range of volatile emotions like irritability, fear and panic.

4. When it comes to perfume, we prefer a subtle fragrance. So we were pleased as pie to discover rareEssence eau du parfums made with consciously-sourced, sustainable 100 percent essential oils. The organic perfumes come in a variety of earthy and floral scents and are available in roll-on and spray form. We especially like Amani (Swahili for peaceful, tranquil and harmonious), a sea-like fragrance with a hint of woody spice.

National Friendship Day was August 4, 2013, but Everything She Wants has decided to continue the celebration with a giveaway from merci fine European chocolates . DanceAfrica 2024 Returns to Brooklyn Academy of Music

The DanceAfrica Bazaar is one of my favorite annual street fairs. I love to watch folks show up and show out in their flyest Afrocentric garb and to shop for handmade beaded bracelets and earrings from the African vendors.  And when I'm fortunate enough to snag a ticket as I did this year courtesy of BAM, I enjoy watching the kinetic African dancers (this time the country featured is Cameroon) during the spirited and spirit-filled DanceAfrica performance at the Howard Gilman Opera House.   (Photos courtesy of BAM/Tony Turner) If you want to join in the fun, here's the weekend lineup that's truly for the culture. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Graces Brooklyn Academy of Music, June 4-9, 2024

Dance is expression. Dance is spiritual. Dance is activism. Dance is life. I feel most alive when I am listening to music and dancing.  As a spectator and fan, some of my fondest moments of watching dance performances have been witnessing the dignity and grace of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Every time I see the Ailey company, I am inspired, moved, and grounded in the beauty and complexity of the African American experience.  Photo by Paul Kolnik For me, the highlight is always "Revelations," Mr. Ailey's three-part ode to his upbringing in the Black Baptist church. The three sections -- "Pilgrim of Sorrow"; "Take Me to the Water"; and "Move, Members, Move" -- tell the story of African American faith and persistence from slavery to freedom. Over the weekend,  I had the pleasure of taking an outdoor Community Workshop in downtown Brooklyn, where we learned some of the choreography for "Revelations." I beamed from ear to ear...
