Cheap Makeup for New Year’s Eve from e.l.f.

The makeup your wear on New Year’s Eve is just as important as your outfit.  As always, I’m a big advocate of looking glam for less.  So e.l.f. Cosmetics (Eyes, Lips, Face) is a great option for any budget fashionista.

Most of the cheap makeup brand’s items range from  $1- $10, and all of e.l.f.’s mineral makeup is completely free of chemical dyes, preservatives, and parabens (preservatives that have been linked to breast cancer).

Even Oprah has crowned the thrifty beauty finds as one of her favorite things; O Magazine featured e.l.f.’s limited edition Studio Endless Eyes Pro Eyeshadow Palette ($10) in its December issue. With 100 fun shades, a mirror, and two double-sided eyeshadow applicators, this kit gives you endless options. It's too bad the kit is currently out of stock, but it should be back soon.

Another great tool to kick your festive makeup up a notch is e.l.f.’s  Shimmer Eyeliner Pencil ($1).  The metallic pencil was featured in People Style Watch and comes in a variety of pretty colors like Iconic Ivory, Precious Pink, Boldly Bronzed, and Black Bandit. For only $1 each, you’ll be tempted to get all nine shades.

e.l.f. Eyelash Curler, $1
Recently I interviewed a makeup artist for her holiday makeup tips, and she recommended using an eyelash curler to create a dramatic look.  E.l.f. makes a Mechanical Eyelash Curler ($1) I found at my favorite 99 cents superstore, so I couldn’t resist.  I’ll try it out before I hit the town (or my sofa to watch the ball drop) and let you know how it works.

While I’ve given you a few tips on how to get dolled up for New Year’s Eve, e.l.f. has a complete look already mapped out on its website.  You can purchase the entire look, which includes 2 in 1 Conditioning Gloss ($3), Shimmering Facial Whip ($1), and the 27 Piece Mini Makeup Collection ($27).

My favorite is the Hot Lashes heated 2 pc lash curler! You may want to read reviews on Amazon about Cult favorite Hot Lashes Makeup artist Kit..Absolute best out there~!

They have an amazing sturdy 24K gold metal curler similiar to the Shu Uemura and Sheisdo one that comes with its own seperate pink small heater base that heats just the pad in the curler, this way my curl lasts till the next day.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Comes to Brooklyn, June 5-8

Attending a performance of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is always a highlight of my arts and culture calendar. An engagement with this awe-inspiring and genre-bending dance company is even better when they perform close to home at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.                                                                                                                                         Photo: Danica Paulos Ailey’s long-standing relationship with BAM began in 1969 when the trailblazing choreographer established The Ailey School in Brooklyn and presented his company’s...

DanceAfrica 2024 Returns to Brooklyn Academy of Music

The DanceAfrica Bazaar is one of my favorite annual street fairs. I love to watch folks show up and show out in their flyest Afrocentric garb and to shop for handmade beaded bracelets and earrings from the African vendors.  And when I'm fortunate enough to snag a ticket as I did this year courtesy of BAM, I enjoy watching the kinetic African dancers (this time the country featured is Cameroon) during the spirited and spirit-filled DanceAfrica performance at the Howard Gilman Opera House.   (Photos courtesy of BAM/Tony Turner) If you want to join in the fun, here's the weekend lineup that's truly for the culture. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Graces Brooklyn Academy of Music, June 4-9, 2024

Dance is expression. Dance is spiritual. Dance is activism. Dance is life. I feel most alive when I am listening to music and dancing.  As a spectator and fan, some of my fondest moments of watching dance performances have been witnessing the dignity and grace of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Every time I see the Ailey company, I am inspired, moved, and grounded in the beauty and complexity of the African American experience.  Photo by Paul Kolnik For me, the highlight is always "Revelations," Mr. Ailey's three-part ode to his upbringing in the Black Baptist church. The three sections -- "Pilgrim of Sorrow"; "Take Me to the Water"; and "Move, Members, Move" -- tell the story of African American faith and persistence from slavery to freedom. Over the weekend,  I had the pleasure of taking an outdoor Community Workshop in downtown Brooklyn, where we learned some of the choreography for "Revelations." I beamed from ear to ear...
