New Year, New You: Get Healthy with Melora Manuka Honey

We usually think of honey as a sweetener.  But did you know that manuka honey is a natural anti-inflammatory that protects against oxidative damage, kills bacteria ten times more effectively than regular table honey, helps wounds heal and eases common digestion and stomach issues?

Sourced from the Manuka super plant, it can also be used topically as a healing face mask. Here's a DIY mask recipe from the Melora manuka honey brand:
  • 1 teaspoon of manuka honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon of rose water
  • Mix the ingredients.
  • Wet your face lightly to make the application easier.
  • Apply the mixture all over your face with clean fingers.
  • Leave it on for a minimum of 20 minutes of more.
  • Rinse thoroughly with warm water and pat dry.

If you have sensitive skin, skip the cinnamon. And when mixing Melora manuka honey with tea or water for ingestion, let the water cool to a warm temperature before adding.  Boiling or extremely hot water will kill off most of the active enzymes.

But why Melora manuka vs. other manuka honey?

Melora is the the only non-GMO, UMF-certified honey on the market.
Wild harvested by a dedicated team of beekeepers.
   Raw and unpasteurized.
Fair Share profit partnership with local Maori landowners.
Proven plant origin and potency through scientific testing.
Melora CEO, Karl Gradon, is a Wharton graduate with a background biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics.

Melora manuka honey is available in the U.S. at select Costco stores.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Comes to Brooklyn, June 5-8

Attending a performance of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is always a highlight of my arts and culture calendar. An engagement with this awe-inspiring and genre-bending dance company is even better when they perform close to home at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.                                                                                                                                         Photo: Danica Paulos Ailey’s long-standing relationship with BAM began in 1969 when the trailblazing choreographer established The Ailey School in Brooklyn and presented his company’s...

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Graces Brooklyn Academy of Music, June 4-9, 2024

Dance is expression. Dance is spiritual. Dance is activism. Dance is life. I feel most alive when I am listening to music and dancing.  As a spectator and fan, some of my fondest moments of watching dance performances have been witnessing the dignity and grace of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Every time I see the Ailey company, I am inspired, moved, and grounded in the beauty and complexity of the African American experience.  Photo by Paul Kolnik For me, the highlight is always "Revelations," Mr. Ailey's three-part ode to his upbringing in the Black Baptist church. The three sections -- "Pilgrim of Sorrow"; "Take Me to the Water"; and "Move, Members, Move" -- tell the story of African American faith and persistence from slavery to freedom. Over the weekend,  I had the pleasure of taking an outdoor Community Workshop in downtown Brooklyn, where we learned some of the choreography for "Revelations." I beamed from ear to ear...

DanceAfrica 2024 Returns to Brooklyn Academy of Music

The DanceAfrica Bazaar is one of my favorite annual street fairs. I love to watch folks show up and show out in their flyest Afrocentric garb and to shop for handmade beaded bracelets and earrings from the African vendors.  And when I'm fortunate enough to snag a ticket as I did this year courtesy of BAM, I enjoy watching the kinetic African dancers (this time the country featured is Cameroon) during the spirited and spirit-filled DanceAfrica performance at the Howard Gilman Opera House.   (Photos courtesy of BAM/Tony Turner) If you want to join in the fun, here's the weekend lineup that's truly for the culture.
