What Hormones Do to Your Skin and How Skin Inc. Can Help!

With age comes wisdom and hopefully a shift from the turmoil of your teens and insecurity in your 20s to more self-confidence in your 30s, 40s and beyond.  But feeling more comfortable in your skin emotionally, doesn't necessarily mean that your skin isn't literally going through changes physically.

According to WebMD, after age 30 women lose one percent of our collagen per year. And as women approach or enter menopause (usually somewhere between 40 and 58), estrogen decreases and so does the body's ability to produce oil and retain moisture, and dry skin becomes more common.

So what's a girl to do?

Skin Inc.'s customized skincare solutions help women create their own fuss-free skincare regimens to target your skin's problem areas, including hormonal skin. The curated range of paraben-free products includes nine serums, two cleansers/exfoliator, one multi-tasking mask and one moisturizer.

Everything She Wants experienced the products firsthand during a press event at Manhattan's luxe The Spa at Trump Soho, and emerged from an indulgent facial looking and feeling refreshed. Here are the three Skin Inc. products prescribed for my hormonal and stressed skin (each product is then blended in a single bottle in the color of your choice, to create a potent daily serum called My Daily Dose):

Renew: Coenzyme Q10
Coenzyme Q10 is a natural cell revitalizer – it activates the production of energy in cells, helping to renew cell functions and increase the absorption of nutrients in skincare products – slowing down the aging process for more youthful skin.

Repair: French Pine Bark
Extracted from the bark of French coastal pine, this super anti-oxidant is 350 times more effective than Vitamin C and 170 times more powerful than Vitamin E. It is combined with EGF, a protein found naturally in skin that increases DNA synthesis and cell growth that moisturizes the skin and reduces the signs of ageing skin.

Reinforce: Ceramide
Contains four different types of Ceramides to reinforce the skin’s protective barrier. This prevents dehydration of the skin and protects it from external stimuli such as chemicals, dry air and UV rays. This serum can also be used to relieve the symptoms of eczema.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Comes to Brooklyn, June 5-8

Attending a performance of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is always a highlight of my arts and culture calendar. An engagement with this awe-inspiring and genre-bending dance company is even better when they perform close to home at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.                                                                                                                                         Photo: Danica Paulos Ailey’s long-standing relationship with BAM began in 1969 when the trailblazing choreographer established The Ailey School in Brooklyn and presented his company’s...

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Graces Brooklyn Academy of Music, June 4-9, 2024

Dance is expression. Dance is spiritual. Dance is activism. Dance is life. I feel most alive when I am listening to music and dancing.  As a spectator and fan, some of my fondest moments of watching dance performances have been witnessing the dignity and grace of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Every time I see the Ailey company, I am inspired, moved, and grounded in the beauty and complexity of the African American experience.  Photo by Paul Kolnik For me, the highlight is always "Revelations," Mr. Ailey's three-part ode to his upbringing in the Black Baptist church. The three sections -- "Pilgrim of Sorrow"; "Take Me to the Water"; and "Move, Members, Move" -- tell the story of African American faith and persistence from slavery to freedom. Over the weekend,  I had the pleasure of taking an outdoor Community Workshop in downtown Brooklyn, where we learned some of the choreography for "Revelations." I beamed from ear to ear...

DanceAfrica 2024 Returns to Brooklyn Academy of Music

The DanceAfrica Bazaar is one of my favorite annual street fairs. I love to watch folks show up and show out in their flyest Afrocentric garb and to shop for handmade beaded bracelets and earrings from the African vendors.  And when I'm fortunate enough to snag a ticket as I did this year courtesy of BAM, I enjoy watching the kinetic African dancers (this time the country featured is Cameroon) during the spirited and spirit-filled DanceAfrica performance at the Howard Gilman Opera House.   (Photos courtesy of BAM/Tony Turner) If you want to join in the fun, here's the weekend lineup that's truly for the culture.
