YouTube Stars Michelle Phan, Bethany Mota & Rosanna Pansino

Everything She Wants attended a festive Unleash YouTube event to celebrate YouTube sensations Michelle Phan (more than 6 million subscribers), Bethany Mota (more than 5.7 million subscribers) and Rosanna Pansino (more than 1.5 million subscribers).  If you live in New York City, you've seen their lovely faces plastered all over subway and bus ads. These young women prove that if you dream it, you can achieve it, and they're inspiring other entrepreneurial girls to follow in their well-heeled footsteps.

Fans anxiously waiting to see their social media idols outside the party's venue in midtown Manhattan were treated to colorful cupcakes created by Pansino. Sam, a 20-year-old special effects makeup artist inspired by Phan, told us, "Michelle saved my life. I've been watching her for eight years when one million [YouTube] subscribers was unthinkable." Because of Phan, who made her first million before completing college, Sam launched her own YouTube channel, Crimson Rose CosPlay.

Michelle Phan super fan, Sam.
Bethany Mota fan, Carol.
Standing next to Sam was an adorable 12-year-old named Carol who hoped to meet her idol, Bethany Mota. "Bethany is so inspirational. She made a video about confidence and she says, 'You are beautiful without makeup'."

Michelle's channel has evolved into a leading young women's lifestyle destination featuring beauty, fashion, DIY and more. Her makeup line, em Cosmetics, was inspired by her channel community.

Bethany Mota was only 13 when she published her first YouTube video back in 2009. Since then, she's built a channel with a global audience sharing her videos about fashion, beauty, DIY projects and more with her fans. In 2013, Bethany launched her own fashion line with Aeropostale.

Rosanna (Ro) Pansino is the creator of the YouTube original show Nerdy Nummies, which blends geek culture with baking tutorials. With over 200 million views, it's the most popular baking channel on YouTube. The self-proclaimed "goofy" girl has built a career and loyal audience of millions of fans on YouTube through her authentic and unique approach.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Comes to Brooklyn, June 5-8

Attending a performance of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is always a highlight of my arts and culture calendar. An engagement with this awe-inspiring and genre-bending dance company is even better when they perform close to home at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.                                                                                                                                         Photo: Danica Paulos Ailey’s long-standing relationship with BAM began in 1969 when the trailblazing choreographer established The Ailey School in Brooklyn and presented his company’s...

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Graces Brooklyn Academy of Music, June 4-9, 2024

Dance is expression. Dance is spiritual. Dance is activism. Dance is life. I feel most alive when I am listening to music and dancing.  As a spectator and fan, some of my fondest moments of watching dance performances have been witnessing the dignity and grace of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Every time I see the Ailey company, I am inspired, moved, and grounded in the beauty and complexity of the African American experience.  Photo by Paul Kolnik For me, the highlight is always "Revelations," Mr. Ailey's three-part ode to his upbringing in the Black Baptist church. The three sections -- "Pilgrim of Sorrow"; "Take Me to the Water"; and "Move, Members, Move" -- tell the story of African American faith and persistence from slavery to freedom. Over the weekend,  I had the pleasure of taking an outdoor Community Workshop in downtown Brooklyn, where we learned some of the choreography for "Revelations." I beamed from ear to ear...

DanceAfrica 2024 Returns to Brooklyn Academy of Music

The DanceAfrica Bazaar is one of my favorite annual street fairs. I love to watch folks show up and show out in their flyest Afrocentric garb and to shop for handmade beaded bracelets and earrings from the African vendors.  And when I'm fortunate enough to snag a ticket as I did this year courtesy of BAM, I enjoy watching the kinetic African dancers (this time the country featured is Cameroon) during the spirited and spirit-filled DanceAfrica performance at the Howard Gilman Opera House.   (Photos courtesy of BAM/Tony Turner) If you want to join in the fun, here's the weekend lineup that's truly for the culture.
