Holiday Gift Guide 2013: Fashion, Beauty, Home & Tech Gift Picks

We know, each year you promise to spend less on holiday and Christmas gifts. And each year you end up with a closet or guest room piled high with random stuff. So to help you pair down your shopping list, Everything She Wants has a few choice fashion, beauty, tech and home gift ideas.

For the fashionista

AVON recently launched its Signature Collection, which debuts with the Mailyn Tote and Wallet ($30 and $15).  The collection is part of the brand's new, premium quality fashion accessories line featuring Avon’s iconic 4A monogram. The four A’s in the logo symbolize the tireless Avon representative motto, “Anytime, Anywhere, Always, Ask.” The Mailyn line comes in a rich chocolate brown color with warm gold tone hardware detailing the 4A motif.

For the beauty maven

Just in time for hat weather, the curly hair experts at Ouidad offers five kits ($30-46) that will nourish your hair and leave it bouncin' and behavin'. The gift kits include Joy to the Curl ($30); Winter Wonderful Curls ($46); Curls are Coming to Town! ($27); and Fa la la abulous Curls ($54).  Each kit contains expertly blended ingredients that will promote healthy and hydrated hair.  Our favorite, Eat, Drink & Be Curly ($40), is well-suited for ethnic hair and quenches thirsty curls with a trio of tried-and-true Ouidad products: Curl Quencher Moisturizing Shampoo, Curl Quencher Moisturizing Conditioner and Curl Quencher Moisturizing Styling Gel.

For the tech gal

Flips Audio ($120) is the first ever headphone flip-to-speaker hybrid that color coordinates with your outfits. Bring the headphones to the gym and workout to your favorite cardio-boosting jams. You can also use the HD headphones as amplified speakers and fill your home with the sound of music.  They're available in black with green trim and white with red trim to complement your fitness gear.

For the country club gal

Goode Rider apparel has branched out from making quintessential horse riding gear (flattering, high-quality riding breeches), and expanded into fitted, performance-ready pieces for non-riders. A highlight of the brand's new lifestyle collection is the Essential Shirt ($79), featuring contrasting, rib-knitted sides, with flattering ruching and sleeve cuffs for the perfect blend of form and function.

For the tea lover

Perfect for any tea lover, renowned French tea brand Palais des Thes has four new colorful box sets ($38) for the holiday season--cleverly named My Tea for the Morning (orange box of black, green and scented teas); My Tea for Brunch (yellow box of diverse black and green teas); My Tea for the Office (sky blue box of black Single Estate and flavored green teas); and My Tea for the Evening (deep purple box of caffeine free, South African rooibos teas). Each box contains six teas in the form of 48 handmade cotton tea bags, individually packaged in biodegradable sachets (eight bags of each tea).

For the sporty gal

The Khombu Boston Bean Boot ($30-$100) is a modern take on the classic, preppy duck boot and you can wear it on the snow-covered city streets or to the slopes.  Khombu footwear is technically engineered, weatherproof and waterproof, combining the latest advanced materials and insulations with sporty styling. These fashionable winter weather boots come in black, brown and blue.

Conway Discount Clothing Chain Closing in New York City

It's the end of an era. Conway discount stores are closing . As of this weekend, a sign on the sole Herald Square location (34th Street btwn 7th and 8th Ave) says the store will close in "7 Days." Before I relocated to New York City, I was introduced to the discount chain while on a bus trip from Baltimore.  I recall the first time I saw Conway's signature pink bags carried by hurried shoppers in midtown. And Miss Foster, the trip organizer and a bargain hunter from way back, took me to the store for the first time. Conway store in the Fulton Mall./Tracy E. Hopkins When I moved here in 1994, my love affair with Conway continued.  I furnished my first apartment with discount knick-knacks and home goods from the store.  And much to my chagrin, in hindsight, I curated most of my wardrobe for my first full-time job from the long-shuttered 42nd Street and Third Avenue store. One regretful ensemble: Lime green and white checkered pants with a matching lime green

Memorial Day Weekend 2023 Cultural Highlight: DanceAfrica Festival at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and Throughout Brooklyn

In her essay, " African Dance is Medicine for the Mind, Body and Spirit ," dancer, teacher and choreographer Cherie Hill wrote, "The more I perform African dance, the more I discover and enjoy euphoria. When the drums are beating and the body is dancing everything fits in sync and I feel limitless and powerful."   Photo by Nate Palmer                                                                                                                         Hill is honored with a portrait by Cecilia Lamptey-Botchway that's on display   at the  BAM Howard Gilman Opera House  during the annual  DanceAfrica Festival .  The festival celebrates Black joy and resilience and the regal power of African dance.  I mark my calendar each year for the  DanceAfrica Bazaar, where I often run into old friends and see familiar faces. In a Brooklyn that has quickly become gentrified, I love to see us walking tall, beaming with pride and to quote Bey, "shining, shining, shining, y

Does Your Cheap Jewelry Contain Lead?

Scouring street fairs, flea markets and discount shops for cheap, chunky costume jewelry is kinda our thing. As a sometime sidewalk sale seller and Etsy store owner, we’ve even sold thread earrings made in Brazil and Peru.  Street fair jewelry is cheap, but is if safe?/Photo by Tracy E. Hopkins Lately, however, we’ve noticed the label " lead compliant " on some of our fashion jewelry finds. But what does that mean? To get the skinny on lead compliance and what we should look for and avoid when shopping for budget costume jewelry, Everything She Wants asked two jewelry experts/medical doctors – Alexis Gopal and Matilde Parente -- for their tips. Everything She Wants : What does it mean when jewelry says, "lead compliant?"   Alexis Gopal : The term "lead compliant" means that the piece of jewelry conforms to the standards set forth by the Consumer Product Safety Information Act , which was signed into law in 2008.
