Are These Late Summer Trends Hot and Not?

This season saw the comeback of several fashion trends from seasons and decades gone by.  Some are welcome.

And some should have stayed where they were....in the past.  I have my thoughts on which trends are hot and which are not.  But let me know what you think?

Harem Pants:  It's Hammer time.  But I can't touch this trend.  The low crotch looks uncomfortable and freakish.  At least Athleta ($39.99) makes a more comfortable-looking and wearable style.

The Fannypack: Personally, I welcome the return of the fannypack. Well, at least a more fashionable version. What better way to carry your essentials when you're running errands or at the gym?  I scored a Kipling Fundi Fannypack ($48) during Fashion Week that would be the perfect addition to any coed's back-to-school wardrobe.

Straw Fedoras: The style is a cute way to cover your dome.  But in New York City the hat has become a little too trendy. If you still want one, check out street vendors in Soho or online to get the look for less.

Elastic Fashion Bracelets: I love elastic bracelets and I'm glad I kept the ones I rocked an armful of in the late '90s.  I've added some new additions too, including a protective evil "eye" bracelet I found at a street fair ($3).

Who wears short-shorts with rain boots?
Cross-Body Bags:  I wish I'd kept my mini handbags from junior high school. Like the fannypack, the cross-body bag is a cute, hand-and-shoulder-free way to carry your essentials.  I recently picked up a couple on sale at H&M ($5).

Rain Boots with Shorts: I'm not opposed to wearing rain boots and shorts.  I just don't get why you'd wear them together. It's hot, so you wear shorts.  But rain is in the forecast, so you wear long rubber boots and socks...with your shorts.  My feet and calves are sweating just thinking about it.  For cute rain boots, check out Amazon.com.  I suggest pairing them with jeans or a long prairie skirt.

  1. Harem pants - no thanks - but I have seen some people look cute in them.

Fanny pack - yes, love it! Just sold a floral lesportsac one in my etsy store.

I have a straw fedora and I love it on bad hair days

I also frequent the shorts with rainboots look although I didn't know it was in style. I just don't like my flip flops or leather sandals getting wet - as rain in the city is kind of filthy.

  2. I love the friendship bracelets or bracelets with a rope/nautical theme. They remind me of early childhood days along the water. And yes, the harem pants, not so much.

Conway Discount Clothing Chain Closing in New York City

(Tracy E. Hopkins) It's the end of a budget shopping era. Conway discount stores are closing in New York City . As of this weekend, a sign on the sole Herald Square location (34th Street btwn 7th and 8th Ave) says the store will close in "7 Days." Before I relocated to the Big Apple, I was introduced to the discount chain while on a bus trip from Baltimore.  I recall the first time I saw Conway's signature pink bags carried by hurried shoppers in midtown. And Miss Foster, the trip organizer and a bargain hunter from way back, took me to the store for the first time. Conway store in the Fulton Mall./Tracy E. Hopkins When I moved here in 1994, my love affair with Conway continued.  I furnished my first apartment with discount knick-knacks and home goods from the store.  And much to my chagrin, in hindsight, I curated most of my wardrobe for my first full-time job from the long-shuttered 42nd Street and Third Avenue store. One regretful ensemble: Lime green and

Soak Up the Last Weeks of Summer Sun At The Rockaway Hotel

Summer is winding down, but there's still time to soak up the sun -- while wearing sunscreen, chic shades and a protective hat or sun visor, of course. If you're in New York City, The Pool at The Rockaway Hotel + Spa  is a cool place to swim, lounge and discreetly people watch while swaying to beat of ambient music.  It's a vibe! Day passes are available for non-hotel guests Monday through Thursday (excluding private events, 10 am -7 pm).  Located in the heart of the Rockaway Beach community in Queens, New York, the Rockaway Hotel is just a few short blocks from the sand and surf. Besides the outdoor pool,  the  newly built 84,000 square foot hotel offers around 60 guest rooms, a restaurant, a rooftop bar, and a large event space. And it's a nice addition to the area.  When my husband and I visited the popular pool, we enjoyed yummy sips and bites poolside. Lounging chairs are first come, first serve so the early bird gets the spot of their choice. After chilling at t
