Land's End Affordable, Classic Women's Style for Spring

I've flipped through a Land's End catalogue and browsed the brand's swim wear and luggage online, but I'd never taken an up-close-and-personal look at the brand (sold in Sears).  So I was pleasantly surprised by Land's End's recent spring/summer 2011 preview in New York City, which showcased classic American style with a few twists.

For women, the collection offers plenty of swimsuits in a variety of colors, and forgiving, figure-flattering options.  From my personal fave -- the tankini -- to bikinis, one-piece suits, and swim dresses, Land's End has a bevy of fun styles with all-over and tummy-control.

Additionally, the spring/summer line includes versatile pieces like high-waisted sailor pants, striped tunics and sweaters, wearable wedge sandals, and an army green jacket (second photo) I've got on my shopping wish list.  Basic tees in fitted, shaped, and relaxed silhouettes are also a staple.

Land's End also has clothing for men and kids, and the latest addition is the home collection available for order online and via catalogue.  Highlights include bedding with whimsical and nautical prints, organic cotton towels, fabric headboards, and storage ottomans.  As a parting gift, I received a monogramed tote and a classic blue and white striped blanket (pictured above).

Conway Discount Clothing Chain Closing in New York City

(Tracy E. Hopkins) It's the end of a budget shopping era. Conway discount stores are closing in New York City . As of this weekend, a sign on the sole Herald Square location (34th Street btwn 7th and 8th Ave) says the store will close in "7 Days." Before I relocated to the Big Apple, I was introduced to the discount chain while on a bus trip from Baltimore.  I recall the first time I saw Conway's signature pink bags carried by hurried shoppers in midtown. And Miss Foster, the trip organizer and a bargain hunter from way back, took me to the store for the first time. Conway store in the Fulton Mall./Tracy E. Hopkins When I moved here in 1994, my love affair with Conway continued.  I furnished my first apartment with discount knick-knacks and home goods from the store.  And much to my chagrin, in hindsight, I curated most of my wardrobe for my first full-time job from the long-shuttered 42nd Street and Third Avenue store. One regretful ensemble: Lime green and
