Win Mark Mentor Program Spring Must-Have Beauty Giveaway!

Everything She Wants loves to encourage women to have an entrepreneurial spirit. So I was pleased to hear about mark Cosmetics' new mentoring program, which helps young women across the country to pay for college by becoming a mark representative and selling affordable mark beauty products to their friends, family, and classmates.

mark mentee Beth Heitker
I chatted with mark rep and summer 2011 finance intern, Beth Heitker, via email and she gave ESW the scoop on the program.  The student at Xavier University in Cincinnati has worked with mark since 2007 and is giving one lucky reader the chance to win her fave mark product, mark Gloss Gorgeous Stay On Lip Stain (a $10 value).

Here's how to win: Read my interview with Beth and comment on this blog post what was most inspiring to you about her story; along with your first name and email address.  A winner will be selected at random and you have until April 20 at 11:59 p.m. to enter.

ESW: What inspired you to become a mark rep?

Beth: The first time I heard about mark was in 2007, through a District Manager from Avon.  She approached me while I was in high school, working at the mall, and briefly described the brand.  Later I checked out the brand on my own time, and I was really impressed with everything mark had to offer.  I was intrigued by the fact that I could start selling and earn money by hosting a party full of makeup with a group of friends. Not only was it a company that sold beauty and fashion products, but it also gave women the chance to make a difference—either for themselves or for others.

During that time, Lauren Conrad was mark’s brand ambassador, and I was inspired by her work with mark’s m.powerment campaign -- their philanthropic movement aimed to break the cycle of dating abuse and partner violence. I loved Lauren’s confidence and passion for the cause and knew if I signed up to be a rep, I could be a part of the movement helping to break the cycle as well as make a difference in smaller ways in my community.  Overall, the brand and its mission is what really inspired me to become a rep.  I wanted to make a “mark” on the world.

ESW: What is your favorite thing about being a mark rep?

Beth: My favorite thing about being a mark rep is all of the opportunities that mark provides.  Not only does mark offer women a chance to become financially independent, but we are offered so many different chances to challenge ourselves and accomplish our goals.  I love the executive team that works for mark, creating promotions and contests, incentives, and dream trips.  It is incredible how mark reps from all over the country cheer for each other and share helpful selling tips, even when they are all competing for the same prize.

I also absolutely love hosting and helping other reps host parties.  I love sharing tips on how and where to apply all of our make up products.  Beauty education is something that many women do not have, and to be able to provide that, spark their confidence and allow them to feel beautiful is such a gratifying experience.

ESW: How has mark empowered you as a young woman?

Beth: mark has empowered me to be a strong and confident business woman.  It has, in more than one instance, allowed me to challenge myself and as a result grow into a more savvy woman.  mark gives me the ability to customize my selling techniques in order to feel the most comfortable and successful.  With mark, I have strengthened my communication tactics and understand the business world as a whole.  I have been challenged to take the initiative and take my entrepreneurial spirit and strive for success.  mark instills the fact that their reps can make a difference in the world and I will take what I have learned as a mark “business owner” to affect others in a positive way.

Conway Discount Clothing Chain Closing in New York City

(Tracy E. Hopkins) It's the end of a budget shopping era. Conway discount stores are closing in New York City . As of this weekend, a sign on the sole Herald Square location (34th Street btwn 7th and 8th Ave) says the store will close in "7 Days." Before I relocated to the Big Apple, I was introduced to the discount chain while on a bus trip from Baltimore.  I recall the first time I saw Conway's signature pink bags carried by hurried shoppers in midtown. And Miss Foster, the trip organizer and a bargain hunter from way back, took me to the store for the first time. Conway store in the Fulton Mall./Tracy E. Hopkins When I moved here in 1994, my love affair with Conway continued.  I furnished my first apartment with discount knick-knacks and home goods from the store.  And much to my chagrin, in hindsight, I curated most of my wardrobe for my first full-time job from the long-shuttered 42nd Street and Third Avenue store. One regretful ensemble: Lime green and
